What Does the Federal Warning Do to a Vape Box Design?
Any vape product that contains nicotine carries the addiction warning on its package under 21 CFR 1143.3, and the rule leaves nothing to taste. The statement reads “WARNING: This product contains nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive chemical.” with the first word in capitals exactly as written.
The warning has to cover at least 30 percent of each principal display panel and a folding carton has two of those in the front and the back. It’s set in Helvetica bold or Arial bold at 12 point or larger. The colors are black on a white background or white on black and the text sits in a rectangle with its own border. Every one of those choices is taken away from the designer before the artwork starts.
That’s why we lay the warning rectangle on the dieline first and draw the brand around it afterward. A carton designed the other way round gets rejected at proof or reprinted after a distributor bounces it.

Why Can’t a Vape Box Be Shipped the Way a Soap Box Is?

The United States Postal Service stopped mailing electronic nicotine delivery systems on October 21, 2021. Its definition covers any electronic device that delivers nicotine or flavor or any other substance through an aerosol. That one line pulls CBD and THC vapes into the ban alongside nicotine. FedEx stopped carrying vapor products on March 1, 2021 and UPS followed on April 5, 2021. Most filled vape stock now moves by specialist carrier or by pallet as a result.
A business to business exception exists at the Postal Service for shipments between licensed parties with age verified delivery. Every route left standing rides a shipper carton of some kind. What Makes a Vape Box Child Resistant?
A printed carton is never child resistant on its own, and we’ll say that plainly rather than sell you a claim. Child resistance comes from a mechanism that passed the test under 16 CFR 1700.20. That test puts the package in front of 50 children aged 42 to 51 months for two 5 minute periods. It then puts the same package in front of 100 adults aged 50 to 70.
California treats a cartridge as a single use item that needs an initial child resistant package. It accepts packaging certified under 16 CFR 1700.15 or heat sealed plastic of at least 4 mils for that purpose. We build the carton around a certified tube or blister or push and slide mechanism. The carton then does the branding while the mechanism does the compliance.
