Custom Die Cut Boxes Build Your Own Dieline

A die cut box is cut to an outline drawn for your product and nothing else, so nothing rattles inside and you stop paying to ship air. The free generator below draws that same flat for you in your own dimensions.

How can you get a die cut box dieline?

Type your three dimensions into the generator above and select your board to design your own packaging flat in minutes. The dieline redraws itself as you type and exports as an AI, PDF or SVG file in seconds with no watermark on it.

You pay to ship air inside the carton when a stock box does not fit your product exactly. The alternative is worse because you end up packing a fragile item into a shape designed for a different product.

We make packaging boxes in Neptune, New Jersey rather than passing your job to a broker. No order we take carries a setup fee or a tooling charge of any kind.

Which die cut box style do you need?

The generator holds 44 structures and every one of them is listed below in its own family. Press Customize this dieline on any card and the generator above opens that structure at its default size for your own dimensions.

Red lines on each card show the cut and dashed blue lines show the crease in the same colors the generator uses on your flat.

What is a die cut box, and when is one worth it?

A die cut box is cut with a steel rule die built for one outline. That is why die cut packaging comes off the press at the same shape every time. Strips of sharpened steel sit in a plywood die board and every carton matches the next to within a fraction of a millimeter. A stock box is cut from a die that already exists so its shape is whatever the supplier happened to tool.

The die is worth it as soon as fit starts costing you money. A carton with 15 mm of empty space on each side needs void fill that costs more per order than the difference in board. Odd shapes are the other trigger because a curved panel or a window or a tear strip only exists when a die cuts it.

What board and caliper should a die cut box use?

Caliper follows the weight and the panel size rather than preference. A 50 g cosmetic carton holds its shape on 14pt board while a 500 g supplement jar needs 18pt or 24pt before the panels stop bowing. Anything heavier than about 1.5 kg belongs on corrugated board instead of folding carton board.

What do we need in your die cut box file?

Send vector artwork as a PDF or AI file on our dieline with 3 mm of bleed. Measure that bleed outward from the cut line rather than from the nearest fold. Name your Pantone colors instead of leaving them as unnamed swatches because a converted build picks its own colors and the result shifts on press.

Keep the dieline on a layer of its own and set that layer not to print. A dieline left in as ordinary artwork comes back as a carton with cut and crease marks printed across the panels. Our design team fixes any of this for free from a small correction to your own file up to a full design built from scratch.

What does the die for a die cut box cost?

The die costs you nothing at all because we do not charge a setup fee or a tooling fee on any order. The die and the printing plates sit inside the unit price on the first order and on every reorder after it. There is no tooling cost to avoid on a reorder because you never paid one in the first place.

What does change your unit price is the color count and the quantity. Every extra offset color adds a plate and a pass so four colors cost more than one until the gap narrows on digital runs under 1,000 units. The price steps down at 500 units and again at 1,000 units on the same artwork.

How long does a die cut box order take?

  • Minimum order: 100 boxes per size and per design, and the minimum comes down on rigid boxes, corrugated boxes and larger sizes. Send us your dimensions and we will tell you where your own job lands.
  • Production: 8 to 10 business days counted from the day you approve the dieline rather than the day you place the order.
  • Plain structural sample: 3 to 5 business days and unprinted so you can check the fit of the real product before anything is printed.
  • Printed pre production sample: 7 to 10 business days on your own board with your own artwork on it.
  • 3D mockup: produced for you before print so you can see your own box on screen.
  • Shipping: free across the US with export orders quoted separately.

The clock starts at dieline approval and that is what makes the free generator above worth ten minutes of your time. Approving a flat you have already drawn and checked removes the longest delay in the whole process.

Which packaging product do you need next?

What else do buyers ask about die cut boxes?

The answers below cover the questions the sections above leave open. Send us your three dimensions if your own question is not here and we will answer it directly.

What is the minimum order for custom die cut boxes?

The minimum is 100 boxes per size and per design. Each size and each design needs a die of its own so they are counted separately rather than added together. The minimum comes down on rigid boxes, corrugated boxes and larger sizes, so send us your dimensions and we will tell you where your own job lands.

Can I order several die cut box sizes in one order?

Yes, you can mix sizes and designs in one order as long as each one reaches its own minimum of 100 boxes. The price breaks at 500 and 1,000 units apply on the same artwork so each design reaches its own break.

Do I pay for the die again when I reorder die cut boxes?

No, because you never pay for the die in the first place. We hold the die from your first order and reuse it on every reorder of the same size. The die and the printing plates sit inside the unit price each time.

Can I get a sample die cut box before printing?

Yes, and you can choose between two kinds of sample. A plain structural sample arrives in 3 to 5 business days so you can test the fit of the real product. A printed pre production sample arrives in 7 to 10 business days on your own board with your own artwork.

Do you charge for design work on die cut boxes?

No, design work costs you nothing at either level because the design team is in house rather than outsourced. Level one covers small corrections and setting your own file onto our dieline. Level two is a full design built from scratch and neither level ever appears on your invoice.

Where are your custom die cut boxes made and shipped from?

We make them in Neptune, New Jersey rather than passing the job to a broker. Shipping is free across the US with export orders quoted separately. You can reach the team on weekdays between 9am and 6pm EST.
