Cupcake Pan Sizes and the Box Each Cupcake Size Needs

Cupcake Pan Sizes and Box Guide

Cupcake pan sizes decide far more than how long you bake. The cup you pour the batter into sets the liner you buy and the width of the baked top. In the end it also sets the box that carries the cupcake to your customer.

Most bakers work with three cup sizes called mini, standard and jumbo. Each one holds a different amount of batter and bakes a cupcake with its own base, crown and frosting height.

This guide gives you the numbers for all three sizes in one place. You will see the pan and liner sizes first and then the inside box size and insert hole for 1 to 24 cupcakes. With those numbers you can order boxes that fit on the first try.

Key takeaways

  • A standard cupcake pan has 12 cups about 2.5 to 2.75 inches across. A mini pan has 24 smaller cups and a jumbo pan has 6 large cups.
  • Liner bases measure about 32 mm for mini and 51 mm for standard and 64 mm for jumbo. Cut the insert hole 3 mm wider than the base.
  • Size each box cell to the baked top width plus 6 mm because the crown spreads wider than the cup that baked it.
  • Add at least 10 mm above the tallest point of frosting. A standard cupcake with a piped swirl needs about 100 mm of inside height.
  • A box of 6 standard cupcakes is about 246 by 164 by 100 mm inside and a box of 12 is about 328 by 246 by 100 mm.

What Are the Standard Cupcake Pan Sizes?

The standard cupcake pan sizes are mini, standard and jumbo, and they differ in how many cups the pan holds and how much batter each cup takes. A standard pan holds 12 cups while a mini pan holds 24 and a jumbo pan holds 6.

Pan Cups per pan Cup top width Cup depth Batter per cup
Mini 24 (some pans 12) 1.75 to 2 in (45 to 50 mm) 0.75 to 1 in (20 to 25 mm) About 1 oz (2 tablespoons)
Standard 12 (some pans 6 or 24) 2.5 to 2.75 in (64 to 70 mm) 1.25 to 1.5 in (32 to 38 mm) About 3 to 4 oz (1/3 to 1/2 cup)
Jumbo 6 3.25 to 3.5 in (83 to 89 mm) 1.75 to 2 in (45 to 50 mm) About 7 to 8 oz (close to 1 cup)

Cup sizes vary by a few millimeters between pan makers. Treat these numbers as a close guide rather than an exact rule. The batter amounts assume you fill each cup about two thirds full, which leaves room for the cake to rise without spilling over.

The cup sets the base of the cupcake but the paper liner inside the cup is what touches the box insert. That makes the liner the next size you need to know.

What Size Liner Fits Each Cupcake Pan?

Each cupcake pan takes a liner whose flat base matches the bottom of the cup. That base is about 32 mm for mini and 51 mm for standard and 64 mm for jumbo. Liner makers list this base width on the pack and it is the most useful number for anyone ordering boxes.

Cupcake Liner base Insert hole Baked top width Box cell
Mini 32 mm (1.25 in) 35 mm 48 mm 54 mm
Standard 51 mm (2 in) 54 mm 76 mm 82 mm
Jumbo 64 mm (2.5 in) 67 mm 95 mm 101 mm

Liner bases measure about 32, 51 and 64 mm.

We cut every insert hole 3 mm wider than the liner base. That small gap lets the cupcake drop in without tearing the pleats. The card still grips the liner so the cupcake cannot slide on the drive.

Muffin liners follow the same three bases, which raises a common question about whether muffin trays are a different size altogether.

Are Muffin Tray Sizes Different From Cupcake Pans?

Muffin tray sizes match cupcake pan sizes because both use the same mini, standard and jumbo cups. A 12 cup muffin tray and a 12 cup cupcake pan are the same pan sold under two names.

The difference between the two only shows up after the batter is baked. Muffins are filled higher and bake into a domed top that spreads wider than a cupcake crown. A jumbo muffin also goes by the name Texas muffin.

For a box this means a muffin sits on the same cell as a cupcake of the same liner size. You plan the height for the dome instead of a frosting swirl. A jumbo muffin box needs less height than a frosted jumbo cupcake box.

Once you know which cup and liner you bake with you can work out the box size for the number of cupcakes you sell together.

What Size Box Do You Need for 6 or 12 Cupcakes?

A box for 6 standard cupcakes needs about 246 by 164 by 100 mm inside and a box for 12 needs about 328 by 246 by 100 mm. Both sizes come from an 82 mm cell, which is the baked top width of 76 mm plus 6 mm of clearance.

Boxes of 1 to 6 cupcakes run on food grade SBS board at 300 to 400 GSM. A dozen frosted cupcakes weigh about 2 pounds in a single box. That is why the 12 and 24 count boxes move to 1.6 mm E flute board that keeps its shape when boxes stack.

These are the sizes we use for our custom cupcake boxes. You can see one cupcake per box on our single cupcake boxes page. Mini and jumbo cupcakes follow the same rule on a smaller or larger cell.

What Box Sizes Fit Mini and Jumbo Cupcakes?

Mini cupcakes fit a 54 mm cell and jumbo cupcakes fit a 101 mm cell. The same counts therefore give much smaller and much larger boxes than the standard size. A box of 12 minis is about 216 by 162 by 55 mm inside. A box of 6 jumbo cupcakes is about 303 by 202 by 120 mm.

Cupcakes Size Layout Inside box size
6 Mini 3 by 2 162 x 108 x 55 mm
12 Mini 4 by 3 216 x 162 x 55 mm
24 Mini 6 by 4 324 x 216 x 55 mm
1 Jumbo 1 by 1 101 x 101 x 120 mm
2 Jumbo 2 by 1 202 x 101 x 120 mm
4 Jumbo 2 by 2 202 x 202 x 120 mm
6 Jumbo 3 by 2 303 x 202 x 120 mm

Minis sell well in boxes of 12 and 24 for parties and offices. The low 55 mm height keeps the box light and easy to carry. Jumbo cupcakes sell in ones and twos as a treat and their tall frosting needs the 120 mm height.

How Tall Should a Cupcake Box Be?

A cupcake box should be at least 10 mm taller than the highest point of your frosting. A standard cupcake with a piped swirl stands about 89 mm tall and the box needs about 100 mm of inside height.

Frosted mini, standard and jumbo cupcakes lined up to show their heights

Frosting height sets the inside height of the box.

Measure the tallest cupcake in a batch rather than the average one because piped frosting varies from one cupcake to the next. Toppers and flowers and sugar decorations count toward the height as well.

Cupcake Height with frosting Inside box height
Mini with a small swirl 45 mm 55 mm
Standard with a piped swirl 89 mm 100 mm
Jumbo with a tall swirl 110 mm 120 mm
Standard muffin with a domed top 65 mm 75 mm

A lid that touches the frosting leaves a flat smear that no customer forgives. If your swirl stands taller than these numbers add the extra millimeters before you order and test a filled box first. The safest way to get all three numbers right is to measure your own cupcakes.

How Do You Measure Your Own Cupcakes for a Box?

You measure your own cupcakes with three numbers taken on a finished frosted cupcake. Those numbers are the liner base width, the widest point of the baked top and the height from the base to the tip of the frosting.

Hand measuring a frosted cupcake with a metal ruler on a bakery counter

Measure the liner base, the baked top and the tallest point.
Measure Where to measure What it sets
Liner base Across the flat bottom of the liner Insert hole, base plus 3 mm
Baked top Across the widest part of the crown Box cell, top plus 6 mm
Height From the base to the tip of the frosting or topper Inside height, tallest plus 10 mm

Use a ruler or a caliper and write the numbers in millimeters because a fraction of an inch is easy to misread. Our box measuring guide explains the difference between inside and outside dimensions for anyone new to ordering boxes.

You can also draw the box yourself in our free dieline generator at the inside size you measured. With the three numbers in hand the order itself takes only a few minutes.

How Do You Order Cupcake Boxes at Your Exact Size?

You order cupcake boxes at your exact size by sending the three measurements with the count per box and the quantity through our quote form. We return a dieline drawn around your cupcakes and a price for the run.

  • Minimum order is 100 boxes per size and design and the price per box falls as the run grows
  • Price breaks arrive at 500 and 1,000 units on one artwork
  • Production takes 8 to 10 business days after dieline approval and 10 to 12 for rigid gift boxes
  • A plain sample takes 3 to 5 business days and a printed one takes 7 to 10
  • No setup or tooling fees apply on the first order or any reorder
  • Shipping is free across the United States on every order

Test a plain sample with real frosted cupcakes before the printed run because a filled box is the only test that proves the height. Every size in this guide also works for muffins and other custom boxes we make for bakeries.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a standard cupcake pan cup?

A standard cupcake pan cup measures about 2.5 to 2.75 inches across the top and 1.25 to 1.5 inches deep. It holds about 3 to 4 ounces of batter when filled two thirds full.

How many cupcakes does a mini cupcake pan hold?

A mini cupcake pan holds 24 cups in most cases and some smaller pans hold 12. Each mini cup takes about 1 ounce of batter when you fill it two thirds full.

What size box do I need for 12 cupcakes?

Twelve standard cupcakes need a box about 328 by 246 by 100 mm inside. That size uses an 82 mm cell for each cupcake in a 4 by 3 grid.

What size box fits 6 standard cupcakes?

Six standard cupcakes fit a box about 246 by 164 by 100 mm inside in a 3 by 2 grid. The insert holes are 54 mm wide to grip a 51 mm liner base.

Are muffin pans and cupcake pans the same size?

Muffin pans and cupcake pans use the same mini, standard and jumbo cups. Muffins bake into a domed top, so a muffin box needs less height than a frosted cupcake box.

How much taller than the frosting should a cupcake box be?

A cupcake box should be at least 10 mm taller than the highest point of frosting or decoration. That gap keeps the lid off the swirl when the box tilts.

The short version

Cupcake pans come in mini, standard and jumbo sizes, and each one takes a liner with a base of about 32, 51 or 64 mm. Cut the insert hole 3 mm wider than the base and size each cell to the baked top plus 6 mm.

Add 10 mm above the frosting for the height and the box fits on the first try. Send those numbers through our quote form and we print from 100 boxes per size and design with free shipping across the United States.
