What Is the Standard Size of a Nail Polish Bottle?
15 ml or 0.5 fluid ounces is the size most of the market uses, and both OPI and Zoya fill to it. Essie runs smaller at 13.5 ml and Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear at 11.8 ml.
Glass bodies for a 15 ml bottle run roughly 28 to 37 mm across and 52 to 64 mm tall depending on the shape.
No bottle maker publishes an assembled height with the cap on because the cap threads down over the neck. Adding cap height to body height therefore gives a number that is always wrong.
Measure your own bottle capped and filled, then send us that measured figure instead of a chart.
Does Nail Polish Count as a Flammable Liquid in Shipping?
Yes for almost every solvent based formula and this section covers how your finished polish travels rather than how your boxes reach you.
The OPI safety data sheet classifies its lacquer as UN1263, Hazard Class 3 flammable liquid, Packing Group II. The proper shipping name is PAINT and the flash point is minus 1 degree Celsius. Other brands land in Packing Group II or III depending on their own flash point.
| What applies | The detail |
|---|---|
| Classification | UN1263, Class 3 flammable liquid |
| Retail bottle status | Limited Quantity under 49 CFR 173.150 |
| Marking needed | The square on point limited quantity mark, 49 CFR 172.315 |
| ORM-D | Retired. The last valid day was December 31, 2020 |
| USPS | Surface network only, not Priority Mail or Priority Mail Express |
A 15 ml bottle sits far inside the limited quantity thresholds and that is why retail polish moves at all. Do not print ORM-D on anything because that marking has been invalid since January 2021. It still turns up on artwork we receive from new brands.
Water based formulas fall outside all of this, so read the safety data sheet for your own formula.
What Holds the Bottle Inside the Box?
Four insert types are standard and the choice comes down to cost and how the pack presents on opening.
| Insert | What it suits |
|---|---|
| Die cut paperboard cavity | Single bottles at sensible cost |
| Molded paper pulp | Brands moving away from plastics |
| Die cut EVA foam | Odd bottle shapes and tight retention |
| Cardboard partitions | Multi bottle sets and gift kits |
We build every box insert from your real bottle rather than from a drawing because glass molds carry seam lines a technical sketch leaves out. Our guide to measuring a box covers inside dimensions against outside dimensions, which is where most insert errors start.
What Has to Appear on a Nail Polish Carton?
When the polish ships inside a carton, that carton becomes the labeled surface and FDA rules apply to it rather than to the bottle. Those rules sit in 21 CFR Part 701 and they are not optional.
- Statement of identity on the front panel in bold type sized against the most prominent print
- Net quantity of contents in the bottom 30 percent of the front panel
- Ingredient list in descending order on any information panel with letters at least one sixteenth of an inch
- Name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer or distributor
Since December 29, 2024 the label also has to carry a domestic address, phone number or website through which you can receive adverse event reports. That requirement comes from MoCRA and it catches brands that had only listed an email address.
Professional only nail products also need a clear statement that a licensed professional is the one who applies them.
How Does a Twenty Shade Range Run on One Dieline?
A polish brand rarely launches a single color and the dieline stays the same across the whole range. Printing the shade name on the carton makes every color a separate design at 100 boxes each. One identical carton with printed labels applied per shade holds the whole range at a single minimum of 100 boxes.
| How you show the shade | What prints | What the minimum covers |
|---|---|---|
| Shade name in the artwork | A version for every color | 100 cartons per shade |
| Shade on an applied label | One carton for the range | 100 cartons in total |
| Die cut window over the bottle | One carton for the range | 100 cartons in total |
Minimum Order, Lead Time, and Samples
- The minimum order is 100 boxes per size and design, so each printed shade name counts as its own design
- Production runs 8 to 10 business days after you approve the dieline
- A plain sample takes 3 to 5 business days and a printed sample takes 7 to 10
- Price breaks land at 500 and 1,000 units on the same artwork

Send us the capped bottle dimensions plus your quantity and whether you need an insert. We price polish cartons from the measured bottle the same way we price every other line of custom packaging boxes. We will come back with a price and a dieline.
