Brown Mailer Boxes

Brown kraft is not a blank sheet but a colored one. Every ink you print on it mixes with the brown underneath and comes out darker than the proof on your screen. Brands find this out after the run rather than before it.

We make custom brown mailer boxes at The Customized Boxes for coffee roasters, skincare labels, apparel brands and subscription services. Kraft is the cheapest liner we buy and it is also the easiest one in our range to design for badly. Our minimum order is 100 boxes per size and design, we also provide shipping free across the United States. We do not charge setup or tooling fees on any order.

What Is a Brown Mailer Box Made From?

Natural kraft liner is unbleached board built mostly from virgin wood fiber. Suppliers put that virgin content at around 80 percent and the sheet is fully recyclable and biodegradable. Nothing is added to whiten it so the fiber keeps the natural brown tone it came out of the pulping process with.

That same absence of bleaching is why kraft costs less than a white liner. Bleached white and coated white boards both carry an extra processing step and the price reflects it.

Which Colors Actually Print Well on Kraft?

The brown ground sits under everything you print on this board. Dark inks stay readable because they are already darker than the board and pale inks lose the fight completely.

How each ink choice lands on natural kraft
Ink choice How it lands on kraft
Black and dark navy Clean and sharp with no undercoat needed
Deep green and burgundy Readable but noticeably deeper than the proof
Light blue and pastels Muddy and washed toward brown
Yellow Almost invisible without a white undercoat
White Works, but the opacity depends on how it is laid down

Why Does White Ink Look Gray on a Kraft Mailer Box?

Because white ink is not fully opaque and the brown board shows through it. Printers run white at three different densities and each one lands somewhere different. A low density white gives an almost transparent wash that eco brands often choose deliberately. A medium density white reads as semi opaque and sharpens the graphics. A high density white needs a specialist ink formulation to reach real opacity.

One printer states the limit plainly in its own guidance. The only way to guarantee full white opacity is to reverse print the design with a flood coat over white board. On kraft you are choosing a level of whiteness rather than getting white.

Can You Pantone Match a Brown Mailer Box?

The board itself cannot be matched to a Pantone number. Kraft shade shifts between reels and between mills because the pulp furnish and the drying conditions are never identical twice. That variation is normal production behavior and not a defect, so no supplier will hold the board to a Pantone number.

Printed spot colors on kraft are matched to the ink rather than to the finished appearance. A white undercoat is what restores a predictable base, and it also removes the natural kraft texture the design was probably chosen for. That trade is the real decision on a brown mailer box.

Brown Mailer Box Questions Buyers Ask

The answers below cover ink behavior and board shade and cost. Send us your artwork if your question is not here and we will tell you how it will land on kraft.

Why do my colors look darker on a brown mailer box than on the proof?

The kraft board is brown and every ink printed on it sits over that brown rather than over white. The board tone mixes into the printed color and pulls it both darker and duller than intended. A white undercoat printed first restores a neutral base, though it also hides the kraft texture underneath.

Is a brown mailer box cheaper than a white one?

Yes in most cases, because natural kraft skips the bleaching step that white liner goes through. Suppliers list bleached white and coated white liners as the more costly options. The gap narrows once your design needs a white undercoat, since that undercoat is an extra print pass.

Can you print white ink on a brown kraft mailer box?

Yes we print white on kraft and you choose how opaque it should be. A light density white gives a faded wash that suits recycled and natural branding. A high density white needs a specialist opaque ink and gets much closer to true white. Full opacity is only guaranteed by reverse printing the artwork on white board instead.

Will every brown mailer box in my order be the same shade?

The boxes will be close but not identical in shade. Kraft liner shade varies between production reels because pulp and drying conditions change from batch to batch. Mills treat that as normal rather than as a fault, so we recommend ordering all your sizes together when shade consistency matters to you.

Is a brown kraft mailer box recyclable?

Yes it is because natural kraft linerboard is recyclable and biodegradable and goes into standard curbside cardboard streams. Heavy ink coverage and plastic lamination both reduce how cleanly it recycles, so an uncoated kraft box with light print is the strongest option on that measure.

What flute do you use for a brown mailer box?

E flute at roughly 1.6 mm is standard for retail weight mailers and keeps the printed face reasonably flat. B flute at roughly 3 mm goes on heavier shipments where crush resistance matters more. We pick the flute from your product weight rather than from the liner color.
