Why Does A US Ring Size Never Give You A Box Size?
A US ring size is an inside measurement while the box has to clear the outside of the band, which sits two band thicknesses wider.
| US ring size | Inside diameter | Outside at a 2 mm band | Outside at a 4 mm band |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 15.7 mm | 19.7 mm | 23.7 mm |
| 12 | 21.5 mm | 25.5 mm | 29.5 mm |
| 14 | 23.0 mm | 27.0 mm | 31.0 mm |
Sizes 5 to 14 cover the range most brands stock and they run 15.7 mm to 23.0 mm across the inside. Add the band twice and the widest piece in that run needs 31 mm of clear space. A box quoted against the ring size alone arrives tight on the top third of that range.
How Far Above The Stone Does The Lid Have To Sit?
Ring height is a separate measurement from width because the lid closes onto the stone rather than onto the band. Measure from the bottom of the shank to the top of the setting with the ring standing upright. A solitaire with a raised head stands 12 to 16 mm tall while a flat wedding band sits under 5 mm.
Our published internal reference for a ring box is 51 x 51 x 38 mm. That two inch square footprint is the figure the whole trade works from on a standard band. Wall thickness then moves that figure inward because rigid board takes three to six millimeters out of every internal dimension.
| External build | Depth | What it suits | What decides it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 x 50 x 33 mm | 33 mm | Flat bands and stacking rings | Lowest postage bracket in the range |
| 53 x 53 x 41 mm | 41 mm | Standard solitaire on a raised head | The common retail build |
| 60 x 53 x 47 mm | 47 mm | Halo settings and tall stones | Clears a 16 mm setting height |
| 75 x 49 x 39 mm | 39 mm | Double ring sets and slim gift builds | Long footprint on a shallow depth |
A slim build lowers the postage bracket once a brand ships direct to the customer, which shows up across a year of orders rather than on one box.
What Holds The Band Without Marking It?
A slotted foam pad faced in velvet or satin holds the ring upright and lifts the shank clear of the base. The width of that slot settles the rest of the job. A slot 3 to 4 mm wide grips a band without leaving a mark on the metal while a wider slot lets the ring tip over.
We cut those pads as loose parts under custom box inserts for brands filling a shell they already hold. A ring box insert cut a millimeter oversize is the most common reason a first sample comes back rejected. Chains and pendants need a coil channel instead, which changes the pad rather than the shell around it.
Which Material Should A Ring Box Be Built From?
| Material | Caliper or weight | What the surface takes | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wrapped rigid greyboard | 1,200 to 1,500 micron | Full print on the wrap, foil | Fine jewelry and bridal lines |
| Velvet over board | 180 to 260 GSM pile | Foil and embossing only | Engagement and heirloom pieces |
| Leatherette over board | 0.6 to 0.9 mm | Foil and deboss only | Signet rings and wide bands |
| SBS folding carton | 350 to 400 GSM | Full CMYK, foil, spot UV | Retail and volume runs |
| Kraft board | 300 to 400 GSM | Print over a white undercoat | Handmade and natural lines |
Velvet and leatherette take no printed ink under any process we run, which decides how most branded ring boxes carry a mark. A logo on either surface arrives as hot foil, embossing or debossing instead. Cardboard ring boxes sit at the lower end of that table and carry the same artwork a wrapped box carries.
Brands who order ring boxes bulk on a single artwork reach a price break at 500 units and again at 1,000. Buyers working across several product lines will find the rest of our jewelry packaging built on these same five materials.
What Does A Custom Ring Box Cost To Order?
Jewelers pricing jewelry ring boxes wholesale want a unit number before a drawing exists. A three size range on one artwork counts as three separate minimums because every size needs its own die.
A customizable ring box starts from our dieline rather than from a stock shell sitting in a warehouse. Packaging for rings splits into two jobs because the presentation box and the outer mailer do separate work. Board weight and lid behavior on the presentation half are settled on our luxury rigid boxes product. The outer half is settled on our custom mailer boxes product.
