Rigid Candle Boxes

A two piece candle box is a lid and a base cut from 1.5 to 2 mm board. It is the build most brands move to when a folding carton stops feeling like enough. The board does not crease, so the box stays square for years. The lid overlaps the base by 20 to 30 mm, which gives the box its resistance on opening.

The Customized Boxes is a direct packaging manufacturer in Neptune, New Jersey with production in house. Rigid candle boxes here are cut, wrapped and fitted with an insert for your jar, and the die stays with us for reorders.

What Is A Two Piece Candle Box?

A base that holds the candle and a lid that telescopes over it, with no hinge and no tuck. The three builds we run differ in how deep the lid comes down the base. The table gives the overlap, the board and the candle each one suits.

Three two piece builds, with lid overlap and board
Build Lid overlap Board Suits
Full telescoping lid Full height of the base 1.5 to 2 mm greyboard Single jar candles that ship in a case
Shoulder box Lid sits on a 10 to 15 mm shoulder 2 mm greyboard base, 1.5 mm lid Gift candles with a two color reveal
Shallow lid 20 to 30 mm 1.5 mm greyboard Retail shelf, lowest board cost of the three

The full lid is the strongest, because the two walls double up over the whole height. The shoulder box shows a band of the base in a second color and is the usual choice for a gift.

How Much Thicker Is Rigid Than A Folding Carton?

Three to four times. A folding carton at 350 to 400 GSM measures about 0.5 mm, and a rigid box wall is 1.5 to 2 mm of greyboard plus the wrap. That thickness is why a rigid box takes a stacked load without the lid pressing the wax. It also weighs three to four times what the carton weighs. The cost sits in the board and the hand applied wrap, which is why rigid work runs 10 to 12 business days against 8 to 10.

What Size Rigid Box Fits A Candle Jar?

Inside size is the jar diameter plus 20 mm each way with a foam cradle in place. Height is the jar with its lid plus 19 mm. The 20 mm covers a 2 mm cavity gap and a 9 mm foam wall each side. The 19 mm covers a 15 mm lift off the base and 4 mm under the lid. The table runs those figures for three common jars, and the cavity rule sits on the candle box inserts page.

Inside rigid box size by jar, with a foam cradle
Jar Jar size Inside length and width Inside height
8 oz straight sided 74 by 89 mm 94 mm 108 mm
12 oz straight sided 84 by 102 mm 104 mm 121 mm
16 oz 89 by 121 mm 109 mm 140 mm

Which Finish Belongs On A Rigid Candle Box?

A printed wrap at 128 to 157 GSM is the standard. A plain colored paper wrap with one foil mark is the lower priced route and still reads as rigid in the hand. Soft touch, deboss and magnetic closures sit on the luxury candle boxes page, because they move the box into a different price band. Candle gift boxes for sets use the same base with a wider insert.

How Do You Order Rigid Candle Boxes Wholesale?

  • Minimum order is 100 units per size and design across every material in this range
  • Price breaks arrive at 500 and 1,000 units on one artwork and not across mixed designs
  • Production takes 8 to 10 business days for folding carton and 10 to 12 for rigid and wrapped
  • A plain sample takes 3 to 5 business days and a printed one takes 7 to 10
  • No setup or tooling fees apply because the die and the plates sit inside your unit price

Rigid candle box questions buyers ask before ordering

The answers below cover the minimum, lead time, lid overlap and the difference from a luxury box. If your question is not here, send us the jar size and we will answer it directly.

What is the minimum order for rigid candle boxes?

The minimum is 100 boxes per size and per design, and it comes down below 100 on rigid builds. Send the jar size and we will quote the real figure.

How long do two piece candle boxes take to make?

Rigid boxes take 10 to 12 business days after dieline approval, two days longer than a folding carton, because the wrap is applied by hand after the board is cut. A plain sample comes in 3 to 5 days first.

How deep should the lid overlap on a rigid candle box?

A shallow lid overlaps the base by 20 to 30 mm, which holds shut on a shelf. A full telescoping lid runs the whole height and is the strongest build for a candle that ships in a case. A shoulder box sits the lid on a 10 to 15 mm shoulder for a two color reveal.

What is the difference between rigid and luxury candle boxes?

The board is the same 1.5 to 2 mm greyboard. A luxury box adds soft touch wrap, foil, a deboss or a magnetic closure, which move it into a higher price band. A rigid candle box with a printed wrap and a foam cradle gives the weight and fit without them.
