How Does the Video Start When Someone Opens the Box?
There are three ways to trigger it, and your choice affects the box design more than you might expect.
A magnetic reed switch is the popular option, because the video plays the instant the lid lifts. A push button hands the recipient control and saves battery between viewings. A light sensor sits somewhere in the middle.
Now here is the part worth raising with us early. If you want a magnetic closure and a magnetic reed switch, those two magnets have to be positioned so they are not fighting each other. Get it wrong and the video either will not trigger or will not stop. That is simple to design around at dieline stage and expensive to discover at first sample.
What Does a Video Box Cost, and Why?
Video boxes generally run between $25 and $60 per unit, and screen size moves that figure more than anything else. A 2.4 inch module sits near the bottom of the range, while a 10 inch display sits near the top.
That is worth saying plainly, because it is roughly fifty times what a printed rigid box costs. Video packaging is not something you buy by the thousand. It is a tool for the few hundred people you really want to reach, whether that is press, buyers, or investors.
Shipping a Box With a Battery Inside
This is the part almost nobody explains, and it is usually what delays a project.
Your video box contains a lithium battery, which makes it a regulated item in air freight. In practice that means a few specific things. Your supplier should be able to hand you a UN 38.3 test report for the cell along with a safety data sheet. Air shipments fall under IATA dangerous goods rules, so not every courier will accept every quantity. Larger runs often travel by sea instead, which costs less but adds weeks.
None of this is a problem when you plan for it. It becomes one when you hear about it a week before an event. Tell us your destination and your date early.
