Which Board Is Allowed to Touch an Edible?
The Food and Drug Administration lists what a food contact paperboard may contain in 21 CFR 176.170 for aqueous and fatty foods. Board for dry food is covered by 21 CFR 176.180 instead. Both sections work from the same food type table and the row your edible sits in decides the board and the coating.

What Changes for Edibles on November 12, 2026?
Congress narrowed the federal definition of hemp inside Public Law 119-37 and the change takes effect on November 12, 2026. A finished hemp product may then carry no more than 0.4 milligrams of total THC per container and total THC includes THCA. A product over that line is regulated as a Schedule I controlled substance.

Why Do Edibles Need Lifetime Child Resistance?
An edible gets opened many times and looks like food every time. The package has to resist a child on every closing rather than only the first one. California puts edibles in the lifetime child resistant group while flower and pre rolls and cartridges only need to resist a child until the first opening.
A child resistant claim belongs to the pouch or jar or tray that passed 16 CFR 1700.20 testing. That test runs with 50 children aged 42 to 51 months and 100 adults aged 50 to 70. A printed carton never earns the claim by wrapping a certified component and we won’t claim it does. We build the carton around that certified pouch or jar or tray and the certificate travels with it.
Can Cannabis Edible Packaging Look Like a Snack a Child Knows?
No, and regulators have already acted against companies that tried it. On July 16, 2024 the Federal Trade Commission and the Food and Drug Administration wrote to five companies. Their THC edibles had copied the cereal and candy packaging that children know.
